What can or can’t I throw into a dumpster?

It is easier to explain what can’t go into a dumpster. No Liquids, No hazardous materials, or animals. No Appliances. No electronics, such as TV monitors.

Most materials relating to construction and homes are allowed.

  • Sinks, bathtubs, shower surrounds, and sliding glass doors

  • Plaster, ceramic tile, dropped ceiling, and wallpaper
  • Wire rope and cables
  • Metal joist
  • Deck
  • Framing
  • Stairway
  • Ladder
  • Roofing (asphalt and cedar shake, slate but NO ASBESTOS)
  • Furniture (chairs, tables, mattresses, box springs, couches, love seats, dining room tables, desks, etc.)
  • Old clothes and shoes
  • Unwanted decorations
  • Old tools
  • Toys
  • Bikes (kids or adults)
  • Shelving
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Packing peanuts and Styrofoam
  • Small amounts of yard waste and brush.

  • Computer (desktop, laptop, notebook, or tablet)
  • Desktop printers (includes: scanners, fax or copy machines)
  • Computer monitors
  • Keyboards, mice, speakers, external hard drivers, and flash drives
  • DVD players and VCRs
  • Televisions
  • Video players and cell phones
  • Animals

Can I throw a mattress in a dumpster?

You can throw a mattress in a dumpster but it does depend on the size of the mattress and the quantity.  Make sure they are placed on the bottom of the dumpster so that you can put the remainder of your items on the top to level it out. 

Can chemicals be disposed of in a dumpster?

As a general rule, no chemicals of any kind can be put in the dumpster. For instance, paint, motor oil, and gas, cannot be put into the dumpster. Please visit our website on the home page and click on “how it works” for a list of these restricted items. 

Can I put furniture inside of a dumpster?

Yes, you may put furniture into the dumpster. It should be broken down and placed into a dumpster so that it is not sticking out above the walls of the dumpster. For example, if you have a dresser, you can take a hammer and break it down. Items need to be level full of the side walls.

Can I put a washer and dryer into a dumpster?

Unfortunately, you cannot put a washer and dryer inside of the dumpster. We do offer a list of what is allowed and what is not allowed to go into our dumpsters. Please visit the “how it works” tab on our home page. Electronics are banned from the landfills as well.
